Taiwan upgrades travel warning for Dominican Republic

Taipei, (CNA) Taiwanese nationals should take special health precautions if they are traveling to the Dominican Republic because of a viral epidemic reported there, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Friday.

The ministry issued a yellow travel alert for the Caribbean country because of the outbreak of chikungunya, a viral disease transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes that has no proven cure.

The disease, which occurs mostly in Africa, Asia and the Indian subcontinent, can cause fevers and severe joint pain, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Taiwan's travel advisory system consists of four levels depending on the severity of the risk, with red signaling the highest risk, followed by orange, yellow and gray.
