MIAMI -- The mother of a Haitian student raped and killed in the Dominican Republic is in Miami to seek support from the Haitian-American community.
Rooldine Lindor was killed July 12 at a construction site in the Dominican Republic, where Haitians say authorities do little to protect them from discrimination and abuse. Police detained two suspects, including a member of the Dominican air force. The case provoked outrage in Haiti.
The 21-year-old's mother, Rose-Marie Lindor, will hold a news conference Wednesday in Miami. Lindor plans to meet with human rights organizations and Haitian Diaspora groups to discuss violence against Haitians in the Dominican Republic.
Haiti and the Dominican Republic share the Caribbean island of Hispanola. An estimated 600,000 Haitians live in the Dominican Republic.
"The Dominicans have killed the student after she has given them 18,000 pesos for them to find an apartment lease," said the HPN source. Lindor was looking for an apartment when her assailants, posing as housing agents, assaulted and ultimately murdered her.......
