Not even a Miss Universe competition can they organize in Dominican Republic

miamiherald.com — This year’s Miss Universe pageant will be held in Las Vegas and not in the Dominican Republic as previously considered.

Miss Universe organization president Paula Shugart tells The Associated Press that too many obstacles have arisen for holding the event in the Dominican Republic’s popular tourist city of Punta Cana. Shugart says the main obstacle is the Caribbean country’s financial crisis.

Wednesday’s announcement comes two weeks after the Dominican government said it could not afford the $6 million in financial assistance that event organizers had requested.

Shugart says the event would have attracted many tourists to the Dominican Republic, noting that is a priority of newly elected President Danilo Medina.

Miss Dominican Republic injured in attempted kidnapping

A few year's ago Miss Dominican Republic was assaulted by men who tried to kidnap her at a shopping mall, her mother said today.

Police said they were investigating yesterday's assault on Larissa del Mar Fiallo but were unsure whether it was a kidnapping attempt.

Fiallo, 20, was recovering at a hospital today, her mother Gisselle Scanlon de Fiallo said.

Her injuries - mainly bruises from strong blows - were to her face, back, arms and legs, said Severo Mercedes, a doctor who treated her.

Scanlon de Fiallo said her daughter told her she was at a shopping mall in Santo Domingo yesterday afternoon when two or three young men came up to her and "tried to kidnap her."

"She is now stable under medical care," her mother told The Associated Press.

Police said they understood Fiallo was hurt by two individuals. "But we still cannot speak of a kidnapping; we are in the process of investigating," police spokesman Ramon Francisco Rodriguez Sanchez said.

Though statistics in this Caribbean country are spotty, many Dominicans say it seems violent crime is on the rise as they confront their worst economic crisis in decades.

Fiallo participated in the Miss Universe pageant in June in Quito, Ecuador. She was crowned Miss Dominican Republic on April 3, taking over for fellow Dominican and Miss Universe Amelia Vega.

Fiallo also won the honour 30 years after her mother was crowned Miss Dominican Republic, in 1974.

Affectionately known as Larimar - a combination of Larissa del Mar - Fiallo is a classical ballerina and student of hotel and tourism administration who also practices judo.
