The couple claim they were denied romantic meals and trips on the Thomson holiday to the Dominican Republic and say they left the island in floods of tears.
Tamsin, 36, said: ‘We expected a stress-free holiday in the sunshine but it was a daily nightmare of disappointment and complaints.
‘Every other couple got three or four complimentary candlelit meals with wine – we didn’t get one. There was supposed to be complimentary fruit and rum in our room as honeymooners but that never appeared.
‘We did get a small bottle of rum on our last day but that was sent with the card, “Happy birthday Miss Harpex”.
‘It wasn’t my birthday and that is not my married name.’
The couple, from Brighouse in West Yorkshire, claim Thomson workers ‘refused to acknowledge’ their marital status and were prejudiced because of their sexuality.
Gemma, 24, said: ‘I’m so angry. Our honeymoon was ruined. We got on the plane home and cried.’
The couple paid Thomson £1,800 for the all-inclusive trip to the exclusive Rui Mambo complex in May after a civil partnership ceremony.
Thomson said the couple had been let down by poor customer service and had been offered compensation for this. But it added the problems were nothing to do with their sexuality and were instead down to a ‘communication breakdown’.
The company said it had ‘thousands’ of gay customers.
Dominican Watchdog Note: The Dominican Republic is not like Miami or Copenhagen! Dominicans in general have a problem with gay people. Gay clubs has been closed down by police in Santo Domingo capital and the gay culture is mostly underground due to many gays being afraid og getting beaten up. |
