DominicanToday.com – As if with a “crystal ball” Peravia province senator Wilton Guerrero’s predicted release of the alleged hit man Bertilio Solano, accused of dismembering two men in Palenque and Nizao last year, was materialized Thursday by the judges of the San Cristobal Appellate Court’s Penal Chamber.
Guerrero has often denounced corruption stemming from the underworld, and the government had to assign him a security detail on fears of an attempt on his life.
The judges Felix Maria Matos, Cesar Darío Adames and Cesar René Peñaló set bail for Solano, whose second identity is Juan Santos Baez, (El Lento), at RD$2.0 million.
“El Lento” and his codefendant Ronny Vladimir Frias, both being held in Najayo prison, are charged with murdering Marcos Douglas Figueroa and Vladimir Paulino Consuegra, who were beheaded and their bodies mutilated, a crime authorities say was a shakedown of drugs.
Judge Adames however voted against setting bail for the alleged killer, noting that the same Court had turned down an appeal on May 9 and that it’s the same case.
Posecutor’s suspicion
The head of the Justice Ministry’s Money Laundering Unit requested an investigation of the San Cristobal Appellate Court judges on frequent denunciations of corruption and the release of defendants in scandalous cases.
German Miranda said Solano’s release would hinder the money laundering and forgery trial against him, because he poses a flight risk. Another hearing is scheduled for Monday in San Cristóbal.
Another San Cristobal scandal
At the start of the year San Cristobal Sentencing judge Francisco Mejia Angomas ruled to release three convicts in a druck trafficking case, arguing that he “presumed” that the number “10” on the conviction meant ten days, and not the ten years dictated by the court. He is currently undergoing a disciplinary trial by the Supreme Court. |
