HIALEAH, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police are searching for a man accused of child molestation.
Joan Humberto Marcelino, 44, is accused of lewd and lascivious molestation and exhibition of a child under 16, unlawful sexual activity with a minor and indecent exposure.
Marcelino is from the Dominican Republic but was living most recently in Hialeah. He reportedly molested at least two children in Miami-Dade County sometime this year. Police said, Marcelino has also exposed himself to children.
According to authorities, Marcelino has been going to health spas and trying to communicate with kids while they workout. A family member of the suspect spoke exclusively to 7 News about Marcelino. She said, she is still in disbelief about the allegations against him. Speaking in Spanish, the woman said, "I'm in shock. I'm in shock and don't believe it. He was a lovable person, decent. Nothing, not a thing, I didn't see him do anything to hurt kids, ever."
The alleged incidents did not occur at schools but do involve school-aged children. Therefore, school police are investigating the case. "As a chief of police, very disturbing. As a parent, I'm very angry, to know that someone like this is out there targeting our youth," said Miami-Dade Schools Police Chief Charles Hurley.
According to police, Marcelino has a Ph.D. and possibly has a clinical background in psychology. Marcelino also wrote several books, one of which is entitled, "Domestic Violence: A Gender Issue?"
Authorities said, the suspect could be counseling children. "When you have that type of ability based in that education level, you can engage a child and develop some type of rapport that brings a child to some degree of comfort," Hurley said.
Marcelino is currently out on bond for similar charges related to incidents that occurred in North Florida. According to police, the suspect transported children from Miami-Dade to Claremont, Fla., near Orlando, where he molested children. Marcelino then returned to Miami-Dade, where the most recent incidents took place.
The suspect's bond has been revoked as result of the crimes, and police are looking for him. Hurley said, "There's a trend in his behavior that gives rise in concern that this individual continues in this deviant and predatory-type behavior."
Authorities believe Marcelino is driving a 2001 blue-green 4-door Daewoo with the Florida license plate number 925 WNL.
If you have any information on Marcelino's whereabouts, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward.
