(discoverestevan.com) - Twenty-nine students from Estevan, Weyburn and Radville have been spending their Easter holiday in the Dominican Republic helping out with a mission project. They've helped out in the sugar cane fields, helped clean up a slum in Santo Domingo and spent some time with a lot of people learning about the local culture.

Theresa Durston is the leader of the group and says the trip has really opened the eyes of the entire group.  She said the students have been able to communicate with the Dominicans through their love, smiles and belief in God. Durston added the students have been without technology like their cell phones for the past week and said the reason for that was because the students learned how much their cell phones and Facebook takes them away from their relationships with other people.

Lane Frasz is one of the students that's in the Dominican Republic. He said that it was depressing seeing how the people live in their subpar living conditions.  He pointed out the one of the differences between the Canada and the Dominican Republic is that the roads are a lot smaller in the Dominican as compared to Canada.

Aurora Hughes is another student taking part in the trip and  said the trip has been an eye opening experience. She said one of the things that she learned was how the Dominicans really love their education. She said the kids are more excited about heading to class as compared to Canadian students.

All of the students said that after taking part in the mission project has made them want to travel more throughout the world and possibly take part in more mission projects. The group is expected to arrive back in Canada tomorrow.

Dominican Watchdog Note | I love these mission and student trips, these young people see the real Dominican Republic and all it's serious problems due to lack of responsability and commitment from PLD. It's not all sandy beach and sunshine like the government like to potray the country!
