Dominicans arrested in New York luxury apartment heist; victim beaten

northjersey.com — With two suspects caught and more apparently being hunted in Tuesday’s invasion of a luxury apartment, the injured homeowner on Thursday recalled the harrowing gunpoint robbery and brutal beating.

But he also said that fast police work had led to the recovery of all that had been taken — about $2 million in jewelry, gold and cash — in the break-in at the exclusive St. Moritz apartment building at 100 Daibes Court about 1 a.m.

Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said Thursday that the individuals, whom he initially declined to identify, were arrested and taken to the Bergen County Jail. Edgewater police later confirmed that the accused are Adonis Sepulveda, 30, and Ramona P. Mercado Vasquez, 26, both natives of the Dominican Republic. Sepulveda was described as a U.S. citizen and Mercado as a citizen of the Dominican Republic.

They were being held on $1 million bail each, both facing numerous charges: two counts of aggravated assault with a weapon, two counts of kidnapping, two counts of robbery, burglary with a weapon, theft of movable property, possession of a handgun and possession of a firearm.

The victim told The Record that he was in bed when three men and one woman burst into the apartment, held him at gunpoint and beat him, then made off with some $2 million in cash and valuables.

“They beat the [expletive] out of me,” he said, adding that he had suffered two broken ribs and a broken shoulder blade in the beating. But he added that he wanted to express “thanks to the Edgewater police, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the county sheriff’s office for a fantastic job” in making the arrests.

“I got everything back,” he said, “the jewelry, the gold, everything, I got it all back.”

The victim said he understood the investigation was continuing and that he felt “very nervous” that two of the perpetrators had not yet been apprehended.

The 25-story building, overlooking the Hudson River, boasts “dazzling views” of the Manhattan skyline, a 24-hour concierge and such amenities as a swimming pool and in-house health spa.

Authorities have released no further information on their investigation, including the possible identities of other suspects or how the intruders gained entry.
