Dominican tried to murder his Scottish wife in the UK

'Holiday husband' Jose Garcia tried to murder wife Fiona - A former hotel entertainer from the Dominican Republic has been convicted of trying to murder the Scottish woman he married after a holiday romance.

Jose Garcia, 28, stabbed 40-year-old Fiona Garcia in the chest amid talks about money being sent to his family.

He denied trying to kill her at their home in East Kilbride on 19 July 2013 and said the stabbing was accidental after he turned round in the kitchen.

Sentence was deferred on Garcia after a jury convicted him of attempted murder.

The High Court in Glasgow heard that the couple met in the Caribbean in August 2010 and began a relationship when Mrs Garcia was on holiday with her mother.

Family debt

In February 2011, after Mrs Garcia had received a £43,000 redundancy payout, they married abroad before he moved to her home in East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire.

The court also heard that she paid off his family's debt.

There was tension in the house over money, however, and during a discussion about him sending more money than they agreed to his family, he entered the living room and plunged a knife into her chest.

Garcia denied attacking his wife and claimed that he accidentally put the blade into her when he picked up the knife and turned round to face her in the kitchen.

After he was convicted, temporary judge Michael O'Grady QC told Garcia it was an appalling and disturbing crime that his wife survived "no thanks to him".

The judge said: "It was a cold blooded attack with a lethal weapon on your wife".
