Dominican grabs cop's gun during gambling raid in US

A bouncer for a small-time Dominican gambling operation grabbed a Hackensack officer's gun and threw it to the ground before he was arrested while trying to hide during a raid by a squad of city officers.

"Nobody was hurt. That's the good thing," Hackensack Detective Capt. Thomas Salcedo told CLIFFVIEW PILOT early Monday.

Two men accused of running the operation out of their Kansas Street home were released without bail pending Municipal Court dates.

Meanwhile, 45-year-old Alejandro Nunez-Castillo was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault, hindering apprehension and disarming a police officer.

Alejandro Nunez-Castillo, an immigrant from the Dominican Republic who's been living on nearby Parker Avenue, was released on $35,000 bail pending a Municipal Court date.

Detective Niles Malvasia headed an investigation that led to the raid, with detectives hitting the house from all directions at 11 o'clock Friday night. Two of the officers came up the driveway and found Nunez-Castillo guarding the back door, Salcedo said.

Instead of relenting, Salcedo said, the 5-foot-6, 156-pound Nunez-Castillo fought with one of the officerrs, took the officer's gun and tossed it. He then turned and ran inside the house, but the officers grabbed him in the kitchen, the captain said.

Police also found betting slips, a ledger maintained for placing bets, playing cards, dominos and chips, Salcedo told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. A small amount of cash was seized, he said.

Charged with maintaing a gambling operion are Manuel Encarnecion-Dellarosa, 55, and Jose Weir, 59, who Salcedo said live at the Kansas Street house.
