Dominican authorities confiscate and destroy counterfeit cigars
Santiago.– Over 1,100 boxes of counterfeit cigars confiscated from Dominican shops and tourist spots were incinerated on Tuesday in Santiago de los Caballeros city.

According to the Dominican Tobacco Institute chief Adalberto Rosa, the counterfeit stogies bore the labels of prestigious brands such as Romeo y Julieta, Montecristo, Partagas, Cohiba, Macanudo, Arturo Fuentes, and Davidoff.

Rosa said the pirated merchandise was seized from locations in the eastern resorts of Bayahibe and Bavaro, and the colonial quarter of Santo Domingo and Santiago. He added that his entity would continue to crack down on counterfeit cigars.

The nominal value of the destroyed merchandise was estimated at RD$2.16 million.

Note from Dominican Watchdog:

This is nothing - 2.16 million Pesos is less than USD 80,000 and the counterfeit industry in the DR is worth million of dollars every year. Why not go after the factories who make them. It's 10 years ago the last action against fake cigars in the DR. Fake Cuban cigars are not only sold to tourists in the DR, but also exported in bulk from the Dominican Republic and Mexico to the USA and then getting their fake COHIBA labels. Counterfeit Cuban cigars in a multi million dollar industry not only undermining the trademarks owners but also damaging the image of Cuban cigars as the quality is very low.

What about the rest of the counterfeit crap sold in the DR....handbags, sunglasses, "polo" shirts, just walk down Conde and see it all displayed. There's nothing real in the DR except the corruption

Instead of going after the small time vedors trying to make a buck why don't they go after the factories making this crap.

BTW Anybody stupid enough to pay the equivalent of $2-3 bucks for a cigar like an Arturo Fuentes deserves the burnt throat they get.
