Dominican Republic Reports 500 Quakes So Far This Year
(PRENSA LATINA) -- Dominican Republic recorded so far this year about 500 tremors, 40 of them this month, according to the Institute of Seismology of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo.

The data also showed that January had the largest number, with 70 earthquakes, three of them exceeded a magnitude of five degrees on the Richter scale.

On July 4, an earthquake of 4.2 degrees occured in the northeastern province of Hato Mayor, and was felt lightly in this capital.

Three days later, another earthquake of 5.1 degrees, hit residents of the southwestern province of Barahona, and caused some damage to buildings.

According to expert Juan Arias, the Dominican Republic is located in a zone of high seismic activity and is necessary for people to start creating a culture and learn to live with earthquakes.

According to him, in that sense it is necessary that the works of various infrastructure are made from the study of the terrain.

Recently the director of the institute, Eugenio Polanco, said that Dominicans are lacking the necessary preparation to face an earthquake of high intensity.

As part of the Island La Espanola, which it shares with Haiti, the Dominican Republic is exposed to various tectonic faults.
