Dominican Fugitive Wanted in Brutal Robbery Returned To Rockland From Dominican Republic
A fugitive who was the getaway driver in a brutal 2006 robbery of a Sloatsburg couple at their home has been captured at his hideout in the Dominican Republic and brought back to Rockland County, where he still faces prosecution on drug charges.

Jose A. Martinez, 24, is part of a group of four men who the Rockland County District Attorney's Office says followed a man and his wife to their home on Nov. 18, 2006, attacked them and were able to get away even though they were stopped a short time later by a police officer for speeding.

The night of the attack, a Ramapo police officer had pulled the men over, but he let them go when a 911 call about a robbery in progress came over his radio. He did not know the men in the car were connected to the Sloatsburg attack.

Martinez was arrested the next day, but he would would soon again be free.

Prosecutors said Martinez agreed to cooperate in the investigation and was released. However, Martinez fled the area and was eventially convicted in Rockland County Court — in absentia — and sentenced to nine years in prison while he was on the run. Shortly after the robbery, Martinez was also indicted on unrelated charges for drug possession and sales in Rockland County.

First Assistant District Attorney James Mellion said investigators learned Martinez was hiding in the Dominican Republic and the Rockland County District Attorney's Office filed an application with the U.S. Justice Department to seek Martinez' extradiction. Mellion said the Dominican Republic courts agreed to the U.S. request, and a warrant was issued for Martinez.

In the Dominican Republic, Martinez agreed to return to the U.S. and Rockland County Sheriff's Department Det. Sgt. Dennis W. Stoll said Martinez was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service. Stoll said Martinez was flown from the Dominican Republic and turned over to the Sheriff's Department at JFK Airport.

Martinez is being held in the Rockland County Correctional Center in New City.

Two men involved in the robbery are still being sought. The Sloatsburg husband and wife were robbed of $1,500 in the attack, in which the husband was beaten and threaten with a gun and the wife was stabbed in the hand.
