DominicanToday.com - The promoters of cockfights yesterday said they reject a bill aimed at increasing the protection of animals, during a hearing convened by the bicameral Agriculture Commission to hear the opinions on the initiative.
Inocencio Martinez, of the Fighting Cock Breeders Association, asked the Commission to leave the “fighting roosters” out of the legislation, claiming that it’s a more than 500 year old tradition in the Dominican Republic.
More than 150 people participated in the hearing, for which the deputy Elpidio Báez the bill’s sponsor, said the initiative is successful since it raised interest in so many people. |
