(thespec.com) - A Hamilton man has died in a pool accident in the Dominican Republic.
Jeremy Zubrinic was on vacation in Punta Cana when he died last week, according to friends and family.
“It was just an accident, but we don’t really know much more about it,” said his aunt Gordana Zubrinic. “I’ve talked to his mother, and she is so upset. It is very hard for them now.”
A sister of the victim said Sunday the death was a “tragic accident,” but added immediate family members don’t want to discuss the circumstances until they’ve heard more from authorities in the Caribbean nation.
Funeral arrangements are still likely a week or two away.
The Canadian government confirmed it was aware a Canadian citizen had died in the Dominican Republic.
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends,” Claude Rochon, foreign affairs spokesperson, said in an emailed statement.
“Canadian consular officials in Punta Cana are in contact with local authorities to gather additional information and are providing consular assistance to the family.”
A friend, who asked not to be identified, said Zubrinic was vacationing at a resort with another friend. He said the twenty-something victim was found dead in or near a pool with head injuries.
“I guess he fell and hit his head,” he told the Spectator.
Friends have begun leaving tributes on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. |
