Calls for Dominican Republic starvation death inquiry(Update 2)
Virginia Owen had dreamed of a fresh start in the sun-soaked Dominican Republic after the collapse of her 15-year marriage.

The 48-year-old moved from Newbury to the Caribbean island where she met 54-year-old Swede Hans Magnusson, and the couple set up home by the beach in Sousa.

But after becoming concerned for her safety following a string of increasingly-sinister emails, her brother flew out and found her emaciated, looking like a "bag of bones" and living in squalid conditions.

Ms Owen's family in England were unaware she had developed liver cancer and had been admitted to an American hospice on the island where she died the following day.

A post-mortem concluded she starved to death.

Her family, who are all excluded from her will, have said they are devastated by her shocking death and have demanded a full investigation.

Her mother says she is desperate to find out who is responsible for allowing her daughter to get into such an agonising state and why her money had apparently run out.

Ms Owen's father, John Walkley, has reportedly said that when his son went out to check on his sister "she didn't weigh any more than our little grandson who's just over a year old".

Rosemary Walker is admamant her daughter could not have sent the "hate emails" - the last of which was received the day before she died - as she was too ill and they were written in broken English.

"I just don't know how this happened," the 73-year-old told The Weston Mercury, "She was such a happy girl."

Mrs Walker said she could hear her daughter "moaning in pain in the background" during a phone call to her boyfriend shortly before her death.

"It is devastating for all of us to see the pictures of how she was found, she looks in so much pain."

Ms Owen's boyfriend has been arrested and released without charge and her family have been unable to contact him.
