DominicanToday.com - Rings of lawyers who forge property titles operate in all of the Dominican Republic, scamming people, companies and even the Government, National Cadastre director Bolivar Marte affirmed yesterday, quoted by diariolibre.com.
He said those lawyers are so bold, that they forged his signature in a file several days ago, to pay to less taxes from the sale of a building in Puerto Plata." When Internal Taxes Agency realized it, they referred the file back to us. You know that each building valued at more that five million pesos must pay a tax. We are the people in charge of appraising all the buildings in the country."
Marte, who signed an agreement with the Agribusiness Board, warned property buyers to hire serious lawyers, “because there are many delinquents who put on the vestments of Law to deceive. Dominicans or foreigners must let themselves be oriented because there are many hustlers in the streets. Sometimes for not wanting to waste just a little bit of time or money, we let ourselves be duped."
The official didn’t name those lawyers involved in that mafia, but affirmed that many have been charged. Moreover Marte noted that more than 60 percent of the national properties lack title and affirmed that the authorities work to narrow that gap.
In 2009 files were charged against a lieutenant colonel, a lawyer and four Supreme Court employees, who allegedly forged deeds of property.
