Anti corruption movement smells fish in trash pickup contracts - The companies contracted to collect trash in Santo Domingo East and Santo Domingo North financed the campaigns of the mayors Juan de los Santos and Jesus Felix, respectively, affirmed the Dominican Alliance Against Corruption (Adocco) Thursday.

Adocco president Julio Cesar de la Rosa Tiburcio said they’ll proceed they’ve done with other officials, despite not getting the response expected from prosecutors. "Well, that doesn’t have a statute of limitations and when that period arrives we're going to mobilize to keep it from expiring, and some day we’ll see."

Interviewed on the program El Dia, de la Rosa aid ADOCCO will take both mayors to court on the alleged complicity between the City councils and the private sector, as the campaigns’ financiers and which were subsequently awarded municipal contracts.

He said Adocco will also seek information of the tenure of the mayors José Enrique Sued of Santiago; Roberto Salcedo, National District; Francisco Peña, Santo Domingo West, and Karina Aristy, of Higuey.

De la Rosa added that with the information requested the citizens of those communities can begin their right of "municipal oversight." "We’ve already trained them to a level with which they can identify, assess, if there’s really compliance with what should be transparency in the management of public funds and above all, how far they are willing to go to use taxpayers money for their electioneering activities."
