Noting that that’s the reason behind the ever growing protests nationwide, the expert said however that in election years those manifestations are appeased when the State cronyism and political parties enter into play.

The panorama isn’t any rosier for Pedro Catrain, who argued that the country is under a deep political crisis from the Government’s lack of programming and rationalization of public policies. “Since November last year the Government of the PLD Party has begun a steep deep decline in terms of popularity, and that’s because of president Leonel Fernandez’s incapacity to respond to the fundamental problems.”

As to transparency, Catrain said although there’s always been corruption, never as now, “because we’re before a lubricated State whose axels need corruption to move. If the President disarticulates the entire corruption machinery he would have a very harsh political crisis of legitimacy, because that’s how he’s worked since his first Administration.”

For Lozano, there currently are serious problems of governance, from the authorities’ clear incapacity to solve the most pressing needs. “Accompanying these incapacities we’re perhaps approaching serious problems of delegitimized politics, which adds to a level of Government spending which doesn’t correspond with the global crisis.”

He said he can’t explain how the inability to respond to demands of spreading protests hasn’t led to a more acute crisis. “Not even the entire political elite have a response to the country’s social and economic problems, and generally it assumes, in a sense, a conservative code which makes things easy for the Government itself.”
