These two news stories came out same day from the Wonderland DR!!

Some 1,800 pregnant women are infected with AIDS in Dominican Republic, said Victor Terrero, executive director of the National Council for HIV/AIDS.

According to the press, Terrero said that they strive to prevent those women's children from suffering the disease."The current situation is a major source of concern, but we are monitoring the problem, we would not like newborn babies to be infected with AIDS", said Terrero.

According to the specialist, most of women, who are usually victims of their couples' irresponsibility, are properly using antiretroviral drugs.

Official sources estimate that some 30,000 HIV/AIDS patients in Dominican Republic are given the necessary treatment, while a similar number of people lack assistance.

A 13-year-old girl gave birth to triplets in a maternity unit in this capital and both she and the newborns are out of danger, the hospital said Tuesday.

The three boys weighed 1.9, 1.4 and 1.7 kilos (4.2, 3.1 and 3.7 pounds) at birth and are the product of a sexual relationship the teenage mother had with a 61-year-old man, who was accused of seducing minors and is now a fugitive.

The three infants are "beautiful" and "healthy," but they are being kept in the intensive care unit because the mother's pregnancy only lasted 34 weeks, the director of the Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia Maternity Unit, Victor Calderón, said.

The babies, however, are not in any danger, Calderón said.

The young mother said she felt "happy" over the births of her sons, whom she named Samuel, Josué and Jovanny, the hospital said in a statement.

The girl was admitted to the hospital in September "with serious health and malnutrition problems" and since then the maternity unit has been implementing "a comprehensive program of preparation for the delivery, which will end this week when the girl is sent to her home" in San José Ocoa, in the southeastern part of the country, Calderón said.

The children "are progressing satisfactorily, and they could be released this week," he added.
