The students were taken to a hospital on Wednesday in Janey, in the central Dominican Republic, the Education Ministry said in a statement, adding that they believe the milk is to blame even though health inspectors had cleared it. Only one of the students remained hospitalized on Thursday.

The government has been struggling with similar problems since February, when about 40 students fell ill at a school in the country's north. Dozens of students in two other schools were later sickened, at least three of whom were hospitalized for more than a day.

The government had suspended the subsidized breakfasts in late May but later reinstated them, though the Education Ministry has not yet found the cause of the illnesses.
